DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF DIABETES
The main dietary recommendation that should be given to a diabetic is to follow a healthy, varied and balanced diet. This means that a distribution of nutrients must be made of 50-60% carbohydrates, 20/30% proteins and 15/30% fats. Generally, a diabetic adult should consume about 35 Kcal/kg/day, that is, approximately 2500 calories per day. Some of the dietary issues to take into account for a diabetic is that they must watch their fat consumption more than a person who does not suffer from the disease. This is because fats can decrease the number of cellular insulin receptors, so this hormone would lose effectiveness. Carbohydrates, which for a long time have been almost prohibited for diabetics, should be consumed as in the rest of the population. Of course, the intake of slowly absorbed sugars is recommended to avoid causing blood sugar spikes.
You can consume whole grain breads, pastas and legumes, among others. Sugary soft drinks and industrial pastries should be avoided. Regarding dietary fiber, diabetic patients should consume up to 35 g/day. Five grams more than non-diabetic people. Fruits, vegetables and greens are an excellent source of dietary fiber.
